Introduction
Tunneling and Microtunneling are two mechanized trenchless technologies which allow to undertake deep underground structures, with a high-quality level.
These two techniques are possible to cross natural obstacles or existing structures (rivers, mountain, metro, roads, buildings …) in all geological conditions, even with high hydrostatic pressure. They are very useful in urban area, maintaining traffic, reducing noise and visual pollution, with limited surface area.
Bachy Soletanche carries out Tunneling and Microtunneling, in association with BESSAC (subsidiary of Bachy Soletanche Group), one of the leaders in this field.
Distinguish of Tunneling and Microtunneling
Tunneling
- Principle: It consists to undertake a circular tunnel, using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), lined with reinforced concrete precast segments placed in advance at the rear of the machine. The excavation is carried out under confinement.
- Type of confinement: EPB TBM, slurry TBM, air-pressured TBM
- Range of diameter: from 2200mm to 8000mm
- Application: sewer, drainage, utilities gallery, metros, etc.
Microtunneling
- Principle: It consists to jack into the ground reinforced concrete pipes from a launching shaft. The ground is excavated using a Microtunneling Boring Machine (MTBM), controlled from the surface. The excavation is carried out under slurry confinement.
- Range of diameter: from 500mm to 3500mm
- Application: sewer, drainage, outfall, water pipeline, gas pipeline, utilities gallery, pipe roofing, etc.
